å ont i bena

Stjørdal, the 20th of August 1950

Dear Alma!

I’m sending you a greeting from old Norway and from Stjørdal. All of us here are fine, we’re well and have way too much to do. I’m helping at the bakery, and then I have lots of flowers and berries to take care of. Not everything is as it should be, when you’re alone, and I still am. I still haven’t found myself a woman to help in the house. You can’t employ just anyone, But I do keep it going. I make myself some food and consequently my care is not the best. I cook and do dishes and do things the best I can. Then Laura comes for a visit and she has much too much to do, but she has time for everything. Mindor is without work, some days here and there (I think he means that he works a few days here and there). Herborg is at the store with her brother Eilif, He’s in the mountains today (nice) We’re having a fine summer, with good crops. God is good, to us Norwegians.

I’ve been thinking about you so much, now since the war in Korea started. it’s sad how we humans are today. That our sons have to go to another country and die for a bullet or a sword so that the country can have its freedom. Poor parents who must say goodbye to their boys in this way, never to see them again. That’s many tears and prayers. While the world sleeps and sins worse than before. The world is heading for chaos and its own destruction for sure. Because most people and those who rule have said goodbye to God in their hearts and want to rule themselves. Then things go wrong in the life of each of them as well as in public affairs. You Alma must let the Lord lead you into his place. We’re having a youth gathering here today at the chapel. Last Sunday the Selbu youth was there, lots of fine and good youngsters, so there are some bright spots in the middle of a sinful family.

At Eidums things are as usual. we’re expecting him here this summer, he’s been in the Hospital for his heart, but is well now. Hanna is as usual in pain and long days in her chair, but life goes on for them too. At Olav’s things are fine he’s had a hard time breathing, but is better now. I have a little wish, that all of mine will be saved, and be brought to see the truth so that our father’s house won’t elude them. I’m now using Johan’s bible, which he sent to Herborg as a gift.

Now I’ll come begging to you! If you see some full and nice flowers that will grow well here please get me some seeds. I want to thank you for all your kindness so far It’s so nice to have flowers that are not seen in every garden. Regards from Markus’ family and all the rest of us. Pretty soon the communication across the ocean will be a thing of the past when we old ones die and are forgotten, that will happen fast.

Best wishes from us all

Aksel, Who will turn 65 years old on November 14 1950

(Old man but young mind)

A greeting from the Garden! (He’s referring to a dried flower that was in the envelope)

I regret not taking a trip to you right after the war was over. Because they took my savings in taxes.

Laura was just here ate a little bit, then home, felt tired, and her feet hurt

Now the party at the chapel is over. Lots of fine youth, and a good spirit. Thank you Lord. Good night it’s 8.20 now I’m going to bed now

Stjørdal 27-11-1949

Dear all of you of ours over there.

I had my 64th birthday on the 14th of this month oh dear oh dear how time has flown. I feel as if it’s not long ago that father rowed me across the river by Tomas Trøan’s because I was going to Bell ringer Bjørgum’s to herd I was 9 years old then (he was probably a shepherd’s boy like the rest of them, including John). Since then I’ve been gone almost all the time. The evening is quickly approaching on me. It went really fast for Olaf Vold the husband of Julie whom you know. She died a long time ago he remarried as you possibly know. He died so quickly. He was doing his work at baker Nilsen’s. Was going to carry a tray of bread out collapsed with the tray and was dead, no time to even sigh. but is now at home with the Lord has probably met brother John. A nice and big funeral at the chapel.

We’re all doing fine. Laura is very busy, and has some headaches so she has her problems. The Eidums in Narvik are not too bad. He has stopped working, a little trouble with his heart Hanna is blind and her leg hurts, so there’s something there too. Olav has pain in one of his eyes he can’t see anything out of it. Looks like he’ll have to quit working. At Gjertine’s things are fine now. Olava is apparently in town with her children most of the time. I’m doing the best of all carrying on in the bakery and with flowers, you must try to send me some nice roses this spring Am not married yet. Herborg is at home with me, but if she goes away I’ll have to look around for a woman to help out. We can say that we’re all doing fine here.

Have a blessed Christmas May the Lord be allowed to bless us all for Jesus’ sake, that’s what he wants. We’re having unusually nice weather here, had a few snowflakes yesterday I’ve been working in the garden up until yesterday. it’s too frozen now. Herborg has been in Levanger for 14 days

Keep well all of you and regards from us all.

Stjørdal the 4th of Jan 48.

Dear uncle Johan!

First I must wish you a very good new year, and then tell you who it is who’s writing to you. Well this is Einar Holm the youngest son of your youngest brother Axel. I’ll be 22 years old on the 28th of February, I’m married and have a little boy who’s 2 and a half years old and named for his grandmother (farmor=father’s mother), Helge Friberg Holm. Has father not told you that I that is my wife and I ran away to Sweden during the war. We caught a freight train from Eidum st to Meråker, from there we were buried in the coal on the locomotive until we arrived at Storlia. It was 38 degrees C below but we got there in good shape both of us. We got married in Sweden in Falun. Helge was born in Katrineholm that’s a little south of Stockholm. I was in the military I was also in Finnland for a little while that was in April 1945. I arrived with the Norwegian forces in Narvik in May 1945 (Norway was liberated on the 8th and the Norwegian forces that had been in Sweden returned to Norway). So I’ve met my relatives up there. In the month of August I got leave from the military so we took the blessing of the church at Værnes church and at the same time celebrated our wedding. I was very young when I got married but everything is going fine and we Astrid, Helge and I are doing so well, so we have nothing to complain about. I was only 19 years old when I got married you see. Now we have our own house with 2 rooms and a kitchen, it’s a cosy little house.

Father has told me how things are with you because I see that he both receives and sends letters to you. Then you’ve sent him packages that I’ve seen.

Christmas Eve we went to father and Herborg’s Helge got some gifts it was mostly toys, all we have here are wooden toys but they are fine things. He also got a 5 dollar from you. so I’ll say thank you very much for the gift Helge will get it when he gets confirmed so that he can have it as a memory of a kind uncle in America.

I’m sure this is lame stuff for you to read, but it’ll be better next time. If you like send me a letter and I’ll reply to it.

Sunday 29.6.46

Dear Alma!

It’s Sunday. Outside the rain is lashing down, the thunder is rolling, and the lightning is blinking. I’m completely alone here today. Father was going to stay with mother in Hegra all day. I had planned to bike out to a great swimming spot we have here, and put my sun suit on, but no, my plans were ruined. All through the month of June we’ve had bad summer weather, we’ll just have to hope it gets better in July. Thank you for the letter father got from you yesterday and for the pictures! I see that you’ve sent us a package again. That is really just too much! You’re writing about <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>what you’re sending, but I don’t quite understand <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>what it is, but we’ll wait and see. You must tell uncle Johan thanks a lot for the package we got from him, with the work shirt for father, socks etc. (stockings? Same word for both in Norwegian) and all the tools. I went to Trondheim to deliver what uncle Ola and aunt Bereth were to have – likewise I went to aunt Gjertine’s (Markus’ wife). She has such a beautiful apartment! She lives with an adult son (single) and keeps house for him. Yes, things worked out well for her in her old age. When Markus died she was left with 6 unsupported children, you know – but she has managed fine and all the children are married and doing well. – We had a visit from Odd Holm recently. He was going into the hospital his tonsils were to be cut – besides he thought he had an infection in his appendix – the malaria is still ravaging his body, poor thing. Odd is a nice fellow.

At the end of July I’m going on vacation with a girl friend. We’re going on foot, with backpacks on, in the enormous mountain Trollheimen. I’m really looking forward to it, because I haven’t had a vacation like that before, we’re going to walk from one tourist cabin to the next – hope I don’t get blisters on my heels! Can none of your children read Norwegian, Alma! James was born in June 1912, just like me – he on the 8th of June and I on the 3rd – so I have 5 days worth of more sense than him! He looks so cheeky on the picture, I think. You have some big children there – but then you look very big yourself too, Grace looks small next to you (When she says “big” she actually means “tall”, it’s the Norwegian way of saying things). Your youngest son is 6 feet and 2 and a half inches tall, I’m 6 feet too – 100 centimeters=1 meter and 3 feet is 92 cm. Eilif is over 6 feet because he’s 1 mtr and 92 cm. there are some big people in the Holm family – father is small compared to us children.

Einar, Astrid and little Helge has moved away from us now, so now father and I are alone here. Einar bought the little house from Arne when he went to Opdal. Arne rented a bakery up there and it’s going so well. People up there love his good coffee bread (I think this is a term used for pastries), and they really like it there – there’s such a light mountain air and so beautiful there. Aunt Laura is bedridden these days, but it looks like it’ll soon pass, fortunately. Uncle Edvard Eidum in Narvik has recently been deadly ill, stomach cramp – was in the hospital – but is apparently well again now. Well, now I hear father coming home so now I must heat up some sausages and peas for supper. Father will probably write himself soon, he’s so busy pulling weeds among the potatoes – weeding the beds of carrots etc. Say hello to all your children from me then and not to forget uncle Johan and his wife. I’ll write again when the package arrives. I’ll say thank you in advance. – Is Grace not married? And do you have only one daughter? Father tells me to say hello to you all.

Friendly greeting from Herborg.

We can get some coffee on a card (I assume she’s talking about a ration card) so now we’re managing fine. There’s enough food to be had now, but it’s expensive. And in this country the housing shortage is bad everywhere. There are many who build themselves houses here now but it’s so terribly expensive that I think it’s strange that people can afford it.

I wrote to uncle Johan and told him to come here this summer. What’s the word on that? James can fly him here, can’t he? That can be done can’t it? Next time I hope to have some pictures to include?

Dear uncle Johan!

First I must say thank you for the letter that father received from you yesterday and thank you for the greeting you sent to me personally! I understand you remember me from the time I was a little bitty girl – aunt Laura told me that you went over to U.S.A. in the year 1914 again and I was 2 years old then. I can remember that I got a sleeping doll from America and that must have been from you, uncle Johan. But now I’ve, literally, gotten“big” 180 cm. tall so father is only a “little boy” compared to us children. Eilif is even taller than me and Arne and Einar are ca. 180 cm. tall too. All my 3 brothers are married, I’m the only one left as an “old maid”! I’ve been a shop assistant at a tobacoo store in Levanger for 8 years, but had to quit and go home when mother got sick 2 years ago. Poor her, she’s lieing up there at Hegra Nursing Home longing and suffering – it had almost been better if she could be allowed to leave this world as she’ll probably not get well again. She’s terribly skinny but her face looks good and she’s talkative and alert.. Father bikes all the way to Hegra twice a week to visit her, in deep snow, storms, rain or cold – he has a go-ahead spirit and is cheerful so it looks like it’ll take a lot to get him down (she actually says “break him”). He puts on the brown winter shoes (she uses the Hegra expression “tall shoes”) – galoshes and check jacket he got from you and off he goes on his bike in good spirits. Yesterday he said that if mother hadn’t been sick he would have taken a trip over “there” to visit you but then he would have come unexpectedly to surprise you, he said, so there you have it! He’s a “kårkaill” now you know as he turned the bakery over to Eilif last summer (“kårkaill” is a Trøndelag expression for a man who has turned his farm over to the son and moved into the “kår”, which is a home on the farm itself built for that purpose) – but father works at the bakery every day. Arne is thinking about renting or buying himself a bakery elsewhere and start up on his own. Einar is also working here for Eilif. He lives here at home with father and me, that is his wife Astrid and 9 month old Helge – a really cute and sweet child! Arne and Tordis have a nice boy called Arild 4 years old – and Eilif has 3 children from 9 to 5 years old. — The flu’ is ravaging here now, everybody is sick – father is in bed every afternoon (after work) Eilif goes to work with a fever of 38.5 (Centigrades), and so does Arne – Einar is in bed, had a touch of pneumonia. We’re having a dangerous weather now – sharp spring air, fog, rain and mud terrible road conditions. It’ll be wonderful when summer comes, I’m looking forward to that. You must take a trip over here this summer, uncle Johan! I saw that you wrote to aunt Laura that you didn’t have the <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>time until next summer but you must keep in mind that you may not be in such good health <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>then.

How are Alma and her family? Give them our best regards. I have sent a letter to Alma and thanked her for all the packages you’ve sent – has she received it I wonder? – Yesterday we received a package with ladies clothes from Florece Winters, father’s cousin in Chicago. You see we got a letter from her where she says she has sent us 2 or 3 pkgs. and yesterday the first one arrived. There was a dotted dress out of silk in it, aunt Laura got that one ‘cause she only has an old summer dress, she’s going to get it altered a little so that it’ll fit. 1 blue skirt fit Astrid perfectly and other than that there were different things that we’ll take apart and alter or give away. I’m going to write to her and thank her now.

We’re starting to get som goods now, but it’s so terribly expensive. They had ready made aprons out of small check cotton fabric cost over <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>40 kr so it’s outrageous. We have a visit from Laura almost every day It’s not easy being her either as they have so little to live off of – but Laura is so cheerful so she manages – just too bad that she has such awful nerve pains in her head and arthritis. Mindor is out of work – he’s also spoilt – but doesn’t have very good health either and is used to having his mother support him – <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>a man of 34 years old! Laura’s husband was such a heavy drinker you know and spent his earnings on spirits so Laura worked at a factory to get food in the house. Well, such is life.

I see that you have sent tools to father and others and that you’re including 2 small knives for me. Well, I’ll say thank you so much in advance – it’s fun to get something you make yourself. Say hello to your wife from me and all of us, keep well and think about coming here this summer!

You ask for bank addresses: Stjørdal Sparebank, Stjørdal, Hegra Sparebank, Hegra. Both are solid and good.

Bestt wishes to you from Herborg.

Eilif overtok bakeriet i sommer. Far arbeider hos ham fremdeles.

<span style=–font-size: 12pt; font-family: Times;–>

Stjørdal 17.1.46

Dear cousin Alma!

Today I’ve been out to buy air mail paper so now you’ll finally get a letter from me.

First of all I must wish you and all of yours a very happy new year!

Thank you so very much for all the packages you and uncle Johan have sent us! It really is way too much so I don’t know <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>how we can thank you properly – it’ll probably be difficult for us to repay you.

This week father received a package from you with among other things brown winter shoes (she calls them by a typical Trøndelag expression “høgsko”, which means high or tall shoes) and caloshes. He was wild with joy over that – he is so very proud of the shoes you can’t imgine! They’re nice and warm, you know, for him who bikes twice a week, all the way to Hegra (in the winter cold) to visit mother. – Mother was very pleased with the back warmer (probably a shawl) she got – she said to tell you thank you so much. It was absolutely beautiful by the way in color as well as everything else – so now mother will look nice laying there in bed. Poor thing, she has been bedridden for a year and a half now – is so thin and completely without strength in her legs – but otherwise she’s actually quite well too. – I just wonder how long a time she’ll be left there to suffer?

Astrid got a coat and 2 soaps this week – I assume she’ll write herself to say thank you. Astrid is in Trondheim today visiting Einar. He’s still in the military and is stationed in Tr.heim. So today I’m babysitting – looking after Their little son Helge. He’s so good and cute! 7 months old. His parents are only children themselves 19 years old both of them.

Father is going to a children’s Christmas party at Eilif’s and his 3 children today. The children in the neighborhood have been invited to a Christmas get-together before the tree is thrown out. Little Arild – my brother Arne’s little son (age 4) is also going there. He’s a nice boy. – Well, now Christmas is over again for this time. There have been lots of parties here, public ones as well as private ones. Father has been gone a lot – he speaks at the children’s parties, you see. (In Norway, to this date, there are always public children’s parties at Christmas. We wear our best clothes, traditional foods are served, there may be entertainment of various kinds, and then we all join hands and form circles around the Christmas tree, then walk around it while singing Christmas carols. Each circle will walk in opposite directions. And then of course, Santa will arrive with gifts for all the kids. We also used to walk around the tree in our homes on Christmas Eve while singing carols, but I’m not sure if that tradition has been kept up, some families may still do it).

The new golf jacket (red) which I got from you was <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>unfortunately <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>way too small for me. I sent it to Tr.heim today. Conrad’s daughter, Solveig is married there and her oldest daughter is <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>13 years old and I think it will fit her, so that way it’ll still stay in the family. It was too bad that it was too small for me – but then I’m extra big and tall (1.80 cm. tall) so I don’t get trampled on when standing in line, you know!

For 8 years I worked behind the counter at a tobacco store in Levanger – but came home a year and a half ago due to mother getting sick – so I keep house for father – and as you know Astrid and Helge are living here with us. Eilif took over the bakery this summer. Father still works for him. Arne works for Eilif too. Arne, his wife Tordis and Arild live in a little house by themselvs a ways from here. They have such a nice and cosy home.

Thank you so much once again for everything we’ve gotten from you. The coat I got after Christmas, had such a pretty blue checkered pattern in the lining, it could be altered for a small, young girl. There are so many people here who are really without clothes so it comes in handy, you know. Thank you for the thread – soap – stockings (are <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>colored stockings in in America?) shirts – suspenders – knives and otherwise everything we’ve received.

I would very much like to go to America and visit you. It would be fun – but I suppose the thought is as far as I’ll get. But maybe <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>you could come here? That’s a good idea, isn’t it? – Is it uncle Johan who has taught you to write Norwegian? I’m surprised at how good you are, even though you’ve never been here in Norway.

Yesterday aunt Laura and I went for an evening walk. The weather was glorious, not too cold and moonlight. Laura and Mindor don’t have much to live on – but she has a good sense of humor, so does well. She hasn’t had too many good days in her life – her last husband was a heavy drinker. She tells me that many times she couldn’t go to a mission meeting because she didn’t have 10 øre to put in the collection box in spite of having a job herself at a factory and earning her own money. Yes, life is different for all of us.

Well, I must quit this, I’m going to my sewing club meeting. We are 9 married ladies (that is: <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>I am the only “maiden” in the entire group) who take turns having it at eachother’s house. – Just now Arvid arrived to have father take him to the Christmas party. He’s telling him to get a move on! He’s standing here in his new, nice coat and a little backpack on his back (Christmas gift) which holds his good shoes. (Because of the cold weather and the deep snow etc. we always had to bring our shoes in a bag or something, and then we changed from boots to our “good” shoes when we got to the place where the party was held). “Farfar” (meaning father’s father, in other words paternal grandfather. Paternal grandmother would be “farmor” which means father’s mother, “mormor” is mother’s mother and “morfar” is mother’s father. This is how we distinguish which grandparent we are referring to) is his hero, because he’s a children’s friend. Live well! And thank you for everything!

Warm greetings from Herborg Holm.

Greet your children from me. Are they all married? I’m enclosing a picture of father, Eilif and Einar.

I forgot to say thank you for the large, wonderful blanket we got. Tell uncle Johan that father did indeed receive the overalls. Those will be great for when he starts harvesting.

Father has spoken with Olaf Vold. He says he has written several letters to Sophie but hasn’t heard anything from her. Vold is still a driver for baker Nilsen. He has remarried. Has a grown up son from his first marriage.

This coming Sunday our whole family is going to Eilif’s and Aase’s place for dinner.

Thank you very much (a thousand thanks) for your interesting letter, which I received yesterday. You are still quite the boy in the smoke (Norwegian expression). It’s really nice to see that you and the missus are still fit as fiddles. Here we’re having a wonderful and warm summer now, and the Germans who are stomping away from here are sweating too especially the fat officers who’ve been fattening themselves up, well goodbye to them, hope we’ll be completely free of them all by October, the other Soldiers too by the way, so that we can be by ourselves again. You can’t imagine how interested I am in getting parcels, many people here are getting packages from there now, from their relatives and friends and it’s needed but how are we going to be able to pay for it, hope that our money too will regain its value soon, but then there will less of it. We haven’t received any packages yet but those who have been sent by Boat will take their time you see, we’ll get everything that has been sent, don’t worry. I mentioned to the wife that you were going to send her something, so you can imagine how excited she is. She’s a little weary and tired, but is working, and sees to her duties still. I hope you and Alma have received my letters where I wrote about our sisters and brothers, they are doing real well, Hanna in Narvik, Laura at Stjørdalen, and Axel is doing real well seems like he lacks nothing. He has now sold his Bakery to his oldest son, so now he (Axel) can take it easy. His wife is sick and will probably not get well again. Hope you didn’t get offended because of everything I mentioned that we need, so you mustn’t think I’m being pushy either, but we haven’t been able to buy as much as a piece of fabric or shoes or underwear items, neither for Men nor women. Silk stockings for Medium sized women is terribly hard to find, and silk undershirts, for women. Hope there will be something available to buy here again too. I see that the war with “Japan” is over soon, so a lot of things may improve, but it will be a long time before we get clothes and shoes. Ask Alma if she can send me a “Ladies Journal” “Fashion Journal for Ladies”. Of course I will write as soon as I get any parcels from you. I understand you’re anxious to see if we get them. Axel received a card from you, the same time as I did. I have said hello to all our relatives here from you and tell them that you are “still going just as strong as ever”, and that you are the same “infant terrible”. Well all is well, and we owe thanks to God for what we have. Can’t remember any more this time, will write again soon. Keep really well then. Say hello to all and thanks in advance, for being so kind.

Stjørdal July 29-1945

Dear brother Johan and all.

Thank you for the card I have received from you, it pleases us to see you’re still alive as so many millions have lost their lives. Everything went fine with our relatives. Eilif our oldest son has been in stormy weather. He was arrested on December 23 at 4 in the morning 1943 by about 20 gestapo (German) hands tied behind his back and sent to the notorious Vollan, after that to Falstad, from there to Grini (all concentration camps), and on July 6 44 to Oraneburg Germany. Was then freed by the Swedish red cross and fetched by them was in Sweden for about two months. He came home after the war had ended, and then there was music and a grand reception here. He was beaten up a lot and 2 teeth knocked out and kicked on the leg so he has big marks of the morals of the masters. He has now taken over the shop, I am (kårkal) to use an old Norwegian name but carry on as before (“kårkal”means “kår-man” and is a term used to describe an old farmer who has handed his house and the farm over to his heir while he himself has moved to the “kår”, which are separate quarters built for that purpose. He could then live there the rest of his life and be supported and fed by his son and family). I was arrested on June 21 at 3 in the morning by 7 German gestapo with machine guns and sent to Vernes airport was locked up there along with about 50 others. we were then sent to Falstad where we were confined behind barbed wire for about 14 days, until the interrogation was over, then we were put to work, I was in the cleaning gang, and you better believe we tidied up and made things nice. We a had a punishment exercise one night we did 50 knee bends for Hitler’s culture completely naked and then we jumped and crawled on top of as well as underneath tables and benches, that was a Sadist of a German, we called him kaukasus (this is a play with words as the word “kauk” in the Trøndelag dialect means yell). Arne and Einar our other two sons escaped to Sweden after I was freed from Falstad August 1 44. That left me alone in the bakery with a boy I didn’t know. They were in Sweden until the end of the war. Einar the youngest had his girlfriend with him and they got married there, he was given duty as a baker in the military and is in Narvik now. Visits sister Hanna Eidum’s quite a bit. They haven’t been in any difficulties. Eilif is Married and has 3 children. Arne is married and 1 child. Einar is married and 1 child, his wife is still in Sweden but is coming early in August, and then we’ll have a small wedding for them on Aug. 11. But the worst thing that has happened to us during the war is that my wife has come down with Tuberculosis and has been at Hegra Nursing Home for 15 months on August 2. She has had diabetes for 8 years and now even worse the Tuberculosis she has a 38 degr. Temp. and is very weak, so it will be her death room, unless the Lord heals her which he has the power to do. Our people has suffered terribly. Now they are digging up corpses shot by the Germans at Falsta it was terrible there in 42. Well keep well all of you. Up until today the Lord has been good.

Helga & Ax Holm

Herborg our daughter is at home now looking after her father Konrad has died of Tuberculosis at Meraker Hospital 1943

Laura is living here, she’s a widow for the 2nd time her son Mindor is ill and at Levanger Hospital.

Stjørdal the 10-7-1946

Dear brother John and all of you.

Thank you for the letter which I received several days ago. Thank you for the package I received yesterday, it contained 2 short pants, 1 suit, 1 dress, a silk ladies undershirt, 1 bag of stamps, thank you so much. Thank you for the package we got today for the wife it contained 1 blanket, a spool of thread, 1 key 1 crowbar. Mother says a Thousand thanks, the blanket will be very nice and warm. I’ve been to see her today she sends her regards to you all she had a fever of 38.1 (temp). So according to human calculations she’s bad, so she probably wont come home to us alive. That depends on the Lord, his way is not our way, so she’s in his hand he wont forsake his own on the day of need. It’s cold here a very bad summer as far as temperatures. but things are growing nicely so it looks like there will be good crops. If only the people could be satisfied but constant complaints about bad prices, so it’s difficult to get anything done. In Finnmark they pay 5 kr. an hr. 40 kr. a day for the rebuilding. completely hopeless, in my opinion, Society can’t live under such circumstances. There’s bound to be a crash economically in a few years, this will never work. There’s enough work here but few will work, but be supported by the state and live in a whirl of pleasures, in drinking and dancing, in (sin) and if there’s too little then demand more, and the state takes taxes out of the frugal and hard working, while the riff-raff live for free. The country will never survive, and when will the people wake up, and the authorities use common sense. May the Lord have mercy on us so that we don’t end up in a new and worse situation than the one we’re just finished with. At Olav’s everything is fine. Likewise at Olava’s Odd is home in Norway now, he has been a little sick but is fine now, has come home from the Hospital. Laura is not well she has too little stomach acid. can’t handle her food, but is now getting acid so now she’s doing better. Our Arne has started his own bakery in Opdal you must visit him next summer when you come, I guess you feel you’re a little too youthful today to take a trip to Norway this year. The coffee is warm.

So live well all of you over there, and thank you for everything.

Best wishes Helga and Axel.

Olav turns 70 years old tomorrow June 10 so he’s an old man now. (Ola boy). Laura is not going there, short on income she said. Herborg is still at home with me and is a kind lady.

Eilif has had, a really bad cold but I guess it’ll pass soon. At Arne’s they’re doing well they were home a while back, it’s strange how time rolls and we with it.

Stjørdal the 2nd of July 1947

Dear brother Johan and you all.

God’s peace, by the son.

Thank you for the greetings we got, from you. Everything is just fine here we are well and have work and food and clothing. Peace with God for Jesus’ blood’s sake. That’s the best of all. Let them take our lives, possessions, honor, children and wives, so be it, let them go, God’s kingdom we’ll keep, that cannot be replaced (I believe he’s quoting a song here). There are a lot of meetings and gatherings here now in the summer time, Was in Opdal at a regional meeting for the China Mission it was a good meeting lots of people and a nice village, small and somewhat bad houses and rock filled ground there are some huge boulders there the ground is completely covered in them then there are some small field patches in between. The boulders have probably come with the ice age in the North because this kind of rock can’t be found in the mountains, From there we have the very much talked about Opdal rock there are several mines in Drivdalen the biggest ledge was 12 square meters and 5 cm thick it’s pliable when it comes out of the mine. I think I’ll get one for a headstone on my Helga’s grave. They make fine polished headstones out of this rock you can have it made in the size and thickness you want. Jarl Holm Konrad’s son was there I went to Sundalsøra with them he’s a dairyman there has 2 children and a capable wife. Both are believers, then I went by car the 7 miles (1 Norwegian mile = 10 km) back to Opdal and stayed with Arne my son they’re doing fine, but unsaved, and that’s too bad. You should see the enormous snow covered mountains with the sparkling sun across them, there’s snow as far as you can see with green spots here and there it’s grand nature for a foreigner and especially for an American who’s born to Norwegian parents and has heard speak of the coutry from his childhood years and then to really experience and see it now at the peak of summer. Yes good God who gave us Norway and so many times we’ve scorned it and spoilt it with a sinful life. May the Lord forgive us this sin, against our country. Dear Johan you must read psalm, 40. 18. there it says: The Lord will think about you, and he is our help my saviour, don’t delay my God. Just think we you and I brother are so valuable to the Lord, that he has not only saved us, but he’s so interested in us that he thinks about us every moment. Even if we forget him. He doesn’t forget us, but he’s our help in adversity yes even in the night of death. I saw that when my dear Helga left me and that’s what’s so big that he has taken her whom he was thinking about home to himself. The blood cleansed of all sin that’s mine she said. Then death becomes a victory. You know we are miserable but he is faithful who gave the promise: I will in no way let go of you and in no way leave you, because in both of my hands I have drawn you Remember Jesus’promise, that’s enough because he’s thinking about you.

Live well then, and thank you for everything you have been to us, we’ll meet soon by the lamb’s throne, there are no tears, no want there. then I’ll see my Helga

Best wishes Axel

We’re having wonderful weather, and it looks like the Lord is telling the Earth to give us a good year. Oh if we could praise and thank. <span style=–text-decoration: underline;–>him.
