THE ENVELOPE HAS TWO BLUE, 40 ØRE STAMPS WITH THE TEXT: “D/S CONSTITUTION(EN) CHR.ANIA 1827”. THIS STAMP IS ONE OF 11 STAMPS THAT CAME OUT APRIL 15-1947 TO COMMEMORATE 300 YEARS OF POSTAL SERVICES. ALL OF THEM EXCEPT ONE ARE REPRESENTED AMONG THE LETTERS FROM JOHN’S FAMILY IN NORWAY. (THE 55 ØRE ONE IS MISSING).

Kjære Onkel John!

Hjertelig takk for kortet, bokmerket og alt.  Du spurte hvor meget jeg betalte i toll.  Jeg betalte bare 0.75 for å få pakken på postkontoret.  Jeg hører du er på hospitalet.  Håper du ikke er meget dårlig.

Jeg var hjemme i 16 dager i julen, og feiret da brylluppet til Evelyn.  Det var meget hyggelig, og Evelyn var en pen brud.

Jeg bor på sentralen her nu.  Har ikke fått meg ny hybel enda.  Det er ikke meget ro her, men en får være gla en har tak over hode.  Sentralvarme og kalt og varmt vann er det her inne.  Jeg trives utmerket.  Det er riktig norsk vinter her nu.  Meget sne og svært kalt, men du, hvor vakkert det er.

Kjære onkel John.  Hjertelig takk for det pene bokmerke.  Jeg vil alltid ha det til merke i den boken jeg leser, så kan jeg lese de gode, rike ordene som står der.  Vi har ikke kjent hverandre så lenge, og ikke skrevet så lenge til hverandre.  Alikevel onkel, føler jeg meg mere knyttet til deg, enn til noen av mine andre onkler.  Du har skrevet så meget pent og godt, som jeg vil ta med meg på livsreisen, som jeg aldri vil glemme.  Takk onkel for alt.  Jeg vil alltid forsøke å leve og tenke efter de gode ordene du har gitt meg.  God bedring onkel, og ha det riktig godt.

Dear Uncle John!

Many thanks for your card, the bookmark and everything.  You asked how much I paid in customs.  I only paid 0.75 to get the package at the post office.  I hear you’re in the hospital.  Hope you’re not very sick.

I was home for 16 days this Christmas, and celebrated Evelyn’s wedding then.  It was very nice, and Evelyn was a lovely bride.

I’m living here at the central now (at the airport where she worked?).  I haven’t found me a new room yet.  There isn’t much peace here, but one has to be happy to have a roof over one’s head.  There’s central heating and cold and hot water in here.  I like it very much here.  It’s a real Norwegian winter here now.  Lots of snow and very cold, but how beautiful it is.

Dear uncle John.  Thank you so much for the lovely bookmark.  I will always use it as a mark in the book I’m reading, so that I can read the good, rich words that are on it.  We haven’t known eachother very long, and not written to eachother for long.  Still uncle, I feel closer to you, than to any of my other uncles.  You’ve written so many lovely and good things, which I will take with me on my life’s journey, which I will never forget.  Thank you uncle for everything.  I will always try to live and think by the good words you’ve given me.  Get well soon uncle, and goodbye for now.
